I simply wanted to honour Juneteenth as it is now a National Day of Independence in the U.S. Such a significant milestone and thanks to POTUS Biden for making it happen.
I took the time the other night to explain it to my 13 year-old daughter. I feel it's necessary for her to be aware of its significance, even though its for our neighbours to the south.
I want her to know of the solidarity between the Black and Asian communities and how it is up to us to learn, to be aware of, and to continue that legacy.
I shared with her that it's important to know the history, so that we can change the future. There is so much work to do, every little step counts.
My hope is that we will in my lifetime see the decolonization of history curriculum in schools at all levels. We need more than just the white man's perspective being taught. We need Black voices and stories. We need Asian voices and stories. We need Aboriginal voices and stories. And that's just to start with, but so necessary.
