Protein

I've been pescatarian for 9 years, maybe 10. It started with giving up beef cause it just didn't do well in my stomach and it took off from there.

I had read the China Study and watched Forks Over Knives and they totally changed my life.

Recently there was a great documentary on Netflix called The Game Changers which supported plant-based eating and it shined a light on protein sources. Most people have the misconception that protein comes only from animals. What Game Changers revealed is that animals get their protein from plants and that is actually the protein one consumes when eating meat.

My main source of protein now are eggs. I love eggs! I don't think I could ever give them up. And I love them in any way: poached, scrambled, soft-boiled, etc. Delish!

I've also embraced protein alternative meats and cheeses, though not all are created equal and there are some duds on the market. Here are a few that I love (I'm not paid or sponsored for any of these recommendations, just a fan of these products.):

These Yves Breakfast sausages are kid-tested and approved! We've eaten them for years now and usually cook up two packs at a time.

It tastes like sausage and the texture is great! Holds up well to pan frying.

Gardein Beefless Ground is a staple in our household. We use it in pasta sauces, chili, and for tacos. The texture and flavour are great for any ground beef recipe and it holds its texture when fried and slow cooked.

Lightlife Smart Bacon is a recent addition to my eating menu. It tastes like bacon, no it does not have a bacon texture, but really what would?!

The texture does well in pan frying and the flavour comes out more if you let it get crispy.

Daiya has finally won me over! It took me a while as I wasn't sure about the texture and flavour of their block cheeses, but this sliced gouda and the shredded cheddar are excellent cheese alternatives!

The flavour is great and they melt exactly how you want cheese to melt! So good!

To clarify, I do not consider the above meat and cheese alternatives to be high sources of protein. I simply enjoy them.

Recently I've been enjoying broccoli, soy gouda cheese, and smart bacon omelets, with soy rice on the side:

This would be my big meal of the day and as you can see it's lots of food! It's so good and so much flavour! I estimate this meal is about 1,000 calories, though I don't know for sure.

The protein in this meal comes from the two eggs: approx. 7 grams of protein per egg. And the broccoli has about 3 grams of protein per cup.

I'm going to go make it now... has me salivating just writing about it!
